Mind Games

Things aren’t always as they appear. We know that our minds can play tricks on us. Just think about some of the shapes you’ve seen in the dark! Things that appear to be wild creatures turn out to be shrubs or bushes.  Things that seemed scary turn out to be nothing at all, but if we’re not careful, they can derail our success!

Recently, I vacationed in Costa Rica.  While I was there, I was determined to stick to my fitness routine.  The very first day, things started great. I did my run and then went over to the bench and started picking up my weights.  I was shocked to discover I couldn’t pick up a 20lb weight, something I had done merely 24 hours prior.

I was frustrated, bummed, and lost my motivation. Could it be because I’m closer to the equator? The magnetic pull?  The 32-degree weather? What the heck was going on?  I went down in weights and used a much lower dumbbell; 8lbs in fact. I couldn’t believe it.  This was what I was able to manage now?

I promptly changed up my morning routine to running and body weight training, all the while frustrated at my apparent loss of strength. My MOJO was gone!

It wasn’t until I returned home and did a virtual session with Lili, my trainer, that she pointed out that I was most likely using dumbbells in KILOS!

Here are 3 important lessons I took from this…

  1. If something seems wildly off base, quickly, question it and don’t accept it at face value
  2. My mind had a profound impact on my energy and how I was showing up to my workouts. Our bodies are impacted by our mindset!
  3. Start questioning where else this thinking is showing up. I started asking myself, “Are there other areas in my life where I’m struggling where I don’t need to be?” and “What assumptions have I made about my capabilities that are unnecessary and harmful to my progress?”

Let me ask you the same questions!

Are there areas in your life where you’re struggling, and you don’t need to be? Is there an outside mentor or coach who can help you shift your perspective and approach things differently?

What assumptions have you made about your capabilities?

What is one challenge that you are currently facing that you’re ready to spin on its head and look at from another perspective?

If you would like to navigate that conversation with a strategic coaching call, feel free to email me [email protected]
