Structured Living

There's an expression declaring there's freedom in discipline; and man is that true.

I've had periods in my life where I've lived very structured and disciplined and other times where I've really loosened my grip on healthy habits and routines.

Here's what I know. Ironically, we all think that structure and discipline will make us feel caged; when in fact those very boundaries are the key to making us feel free!

Let me explain.

When you have a structured life, you wake up at the same time each day, make your bed, spend time in gratitude, workout, eat healthy, it takes discipline and grit to remain consistent.

There are days it comes easily and other days it's difficult to drag yourself to get going. When your structured schedule becomes habitual, your habits take over on the difficult days, so you show up regardless. You don't have to think about negotiating because your habits have formed who you are. For example, I changed my mindset around working out. I was the type of person who didn't like to get sweaty but wanted the results and would exercise as a form of punishment for my poor food choices.

I consciously changed my identity to an athlete. I work out now to nourish my nervous system.  I do those extra squats because my 80-year-old self will thank me, and I see exercise as a form of self love rather than punishment.

Discipline changes your perspective and identity!

Discipline also changes your self confidence.  When you show up each day and follow your routine you tell yourself that you're worth it. This builds a stronger self image. When you start seeing results, like the inches fading or the muscle gains it confirms that you are the captain of your ship. You're not at the mercy of the world. You can literally transform your body and life completely with scheduled discipline.

Discipline doesn't have to be, nor should it be, related to fitness alone.

Discipline will drive results that change your life.  Include disciplined habits like reading inspirational books instead of mindless scrolling. Meal prepping and preparing in advance for the most nutritious food-fueled week ahead communicates to your brain that you are worth it.

Look at the highest achievers in the world, they are highly disciplined and live a fully charged and engaged life!
